Vermouth: what is it and why is everyone drinking it?

The origins of Vermouth

Vermouth is a fortified and aromatized wine, enriched with a variety of botanicals such as herbs, spices, and roots. The term “vermouth” comes from the German word “wermut,” meaning wormwood, one of the key plants used in its production. While its origins trace back to ancient Greece, it was in 18th-century Italy—specifically in Turin—that vermouth took on the form and prestige we know today. Celebrated for its digestive properties and complex flavor, vermouth has become a staple both in mixology and as a standalone drink.

How do you drink Vermouth?

Traditionally enjoyed as an aperitif, vermouth is served neat or over ice, often garnished with a slice of citrus or a lemon twist. Its versatility makes it a key ingredient in numerous classic cocktails, including the Martini, Negroni, and Americano. In recent years, there has been a revival of vermouth as a drink to be savored on its own, thanks to its aromatic complexity and the wide range of styles available, from dry to sweet. This trend has led to a renewed focus on the quality of ingredients and artisanal production methods.

What makes Siridia’s Vermouth unique?

At Siridia, when we introduce our Vermouth Rosso, we call it a “special product.”

But the more we reflect on its origins and craftsmanship, the more we realize that the right word might actually be “unique.”

Siridia’s Vermouth Rosso is born from a red wine made with dried grapes—an unconventional choice.

The same grape varieties used to craft our Amarone are used here, but in this case, the wine is not aged; we want to preserve all its fresh fruit character. This alone sets our vermouth apart, as very few vermouths are made from dried-grape wines, and even fewer from dried red grapes.

By definition, vermouth is a wine infused with botanicals. At Siridia, our recipe is the result of meticulous research—a secret formula combining ten carefully selected botanicals, each chosen to enhance the distinctive traits of the base wine. With this creation, Siridia stays true to its winemaking vocation. In fact, we believe wine can be even more—it can become the perfect companion for a night out, a refined aperitif, or a signature cocktail.

“I don’t know about you, but now that I have Vermouth, I’m making a few more Americanos.”
This line from Edoardo, Siridia’s founder and winemaker, perfectly sums up our vision.

Our vermouth is crafted to shine in mixology, and soon it will be accompanied by exclusive recipes developed by professional bartenders and passionate enthusiasts.

Are you a bartender or a cocktail lover? If you’ve created a cocktail featuring our vermouth, send us your recipe—we’d love to share it with others who, like us, enjoy experimenting and innovating.
